National Servicemen's Association of Australia (Qld) inc

Formation and history of the Rockhampton and Dristrict Branch
of the National Servicemen's Association of Australia.

On the 18th November 2000, a meeting was call inviting intrerested persons who had served as National Servicemen during the period from 1951 to 1972 to attend a meeting at the Criterion Hotel commencing at 7.00pm for the purpose of forming a Branch of the National Servicemen's Association.

This meeting was Chaired by Ray Spring who was supported by Alex Garlin from Brisbane, and Eric Beutel Vice President of the Caboolture Branch.

As a result of this meeting, a further meeting was called on the 11th December 2000, to form a Branch of the Association with (18) persons attending.
The founding members were.

R.Smith - G.Burggaff -W.Sichter -H.Everett -G.Grace -A.Brown -J.Webb - J.Markey -
J.Wilson - K.Bloxsom.

The following were elected to the Executive Committee:

The first General Meeting was held on the 22nd January 2001 at the Criterion Hotel. It is to be noted that the meetings continue to be held at that location.

During the meeting, The Federal Member Ms. K Livermore M H R and Mr. J Pearce M L A, for Fitzroy, accompanied by Police Superintendent, Wayne Browning, were escorted into the meeting by the National Servicemen's Pipes and Drums Band.  The members of parliament presented the Australian Flag and the Queensland Flag to the Branch.

During the meeting, retired Colonel Neville Harris was appointed to the position of Patron, a position he still holds.

At the meeting held on 11th February, 2001 J Egretz resigned the position of secretary with W Sichter carring on in the position.

The Rev. Fr.B Harvey accepted the position of Padre. On ANZAC DAY, 2001 the branch marched behind the Banner for the first time.

At The meeting held on 28th May, 2001 the position of the secretary was called, with J Hannay appointed to the position ahead of Wilf Sichter.

The first Annual General meeting was called on 27th August, 2001 with the following members
being appointed to the execuitive Committee:

At the meeting held on 24th September,2001 Secretary J Hannay tendered his resignation.
President K Bloxsom also tendered his resignation. H Dicinoski assumed the Position of
President and E Williams the roll of Secretary.

The State Management Committee, Based in Brisbane, accepted our new branch into the (QLD) Inc
Association and presented us with a Certificate of Charter on 3rd March, 2002.

Queensland President, Mr Colin Bell officiated on this important occasion. The newly elected Rockhampton
Branch Committee then set out to recruit members and to raise funds to run the activities of the Branch.
To assist,a raffle was held once a month on the monthly meeting date.

The second Annual General Meeting was held on the 23rd September,2002 with the following being elected
to the Execuitive and General Committee Positions

Major events that mark important milestones in the progress of the Branch include the presentation of the ANSM to about
300 personnel at 42 RQR Western Street complex. The parade was held on 20th October, 2002 followed by a BBQ lunch
organised by the WAC's.

Senior Presenting Officers were: Brigadier S. Graw, Wing Commander G. Krause and Lt. Col. John Phelan.

Parade RSM was Mr. John Wilson.

In 2002 a sub committee of the Branch was formed, using the colorful name of WAC's, Women's Auxiliary Committee.
Office bearers elected were:

Secretary: Beres Martin

All other women who attended the meeting automatically formed the committee.

This sub committee was tasked with the responsibility of supporting the Branch by assisting to raise funds and by offering
assistance at raffles, shopping centre sales, functions, BBQ's and tours.

The third Annual General Meeting was held on the 25th August, 2003 with the following being elected

The 2007 Annual General Meeting was held on 26th February, 2007 with the following being elected

Dedication of the Memorial to the National Servicemen was held on 15th July, 2007 at the Botanical Gardens, Rockhampton. This service was extremely well attended as was the function that was later held at the Athelstane Bowls Club.

The 42nd Battalion Royal Queensland Regiment provided the Catafalque and Flag Party and following this, the President of the Branch gave the welcoming speech and introduced Chief Superintendent Kevin Hodges, Central Police Region, who gave the address.

Assistant Commissioner Ann Lewis and Mr. John Hogan unveiled the Memorial. After the unveiling, Councillor
Graham Brady of the Rockhampton City Council, was called upon to accept the Memorial on behalf of the Citizens of Rockhampton and District. Councillor Brady followed the presentation with an acceptance speech. The Branch wishes to acknowledge the support given by the Rockhampton City Council in the design and construction of the Memorial.

The three (3) Chaplians, The Rev. Father R. Wallace, Ex-National Servicemen's Association and Chaplin T. Parkin Gracemere R.S.L. and N.S.A.A. Combined Central, then carried out the Dedication Service which constited of the Dedication, the Blessing of the Memorial, Prayers of Remembrance, Prayers of Peace and the Lord's Prayer.

Following the Wreath Laying Ceremony, Warrant Officer Class 1, Malcolm Cockburn, delivered the Requiem and Mr. B. Abraham, Secretary of Emu Park R.S.L. Sub-Branch, recited the Ode.

A bugler from the Capricorn Silver Band sounded the Last Post; Piper Lester Soblusky played the Lament followed by the Rouse.

The Rev. B. Harvey gave the final blessing. After the Benediction and the signing of the National Anthem, President John Hogan proposed a vote of thanks to all involved. M.C. for the day was Mr. Jim Webb. The overall Co-ordinator was Secretary Mr. Ken Tracey.

The 2008 Annual General Meeting was held on 25th February 2008 with the following being elected to
the Executive Committee and the General Committee positions.

No appointment was made in respect of the position of Auditor. C. Green having declined the position due
to ill health.

National Servicemen's Day has been celebrated on the closest Sunday to 14th February each year with a
march down the Rockhampton Mall to the Criterion Hotel; accompanied by the Capricornia Pipes and Drums.
This celebration has been held each year since 2002.

Each year after the Rockhampton ANZAC DAY service and march, a contingent from our Branch travels to
Marmor, a small rural town 30klm south of Rockhampton, to participate in their ANZAC DAY march and service. Their hospitality has been tremendous, with an evening BBQ provided. This event has occurred since 2003.

Since 2001 we have celebrated with a Christmas Function, which has always been well attended.

In 2005 the Rockhampton Branch organised a successful four days State Conference.

The Branch acknowledges the support received from Rockhampton City Council in the presentation of the City Flag, a wireless amplifier system and the departmental and monetary assistance in relation to the 2005 State Conference.
